Martin also makes it difficult for the reader to know which side of the war they are on. Many of the characters are difficult to like because they have done horrible things. The characters in A Clash of Kings continue to reside in grey area in terms of morality. Additionally, Robb Stark is proclaimed King in the North by his liege lords, and Daenerys Targaryen works to build up her khalasar and army as well as to protect her new born dragons. King Robert’s younger brothers, Stannis and Renly, both proclaim themselves king while House Lannister works to secure the throne for the boy-king, Joffrey Barratheon. There are multiple claims to the Iron Throne throughout the book. Martin continues to focus on the Stark family although there are a few additional points of view. Even though it is longer than the first book, it moves at a much quicker pace. Where it takes a few hundred pages for the action to really start in A Game of Thrones, the second book in the series is full of action from the first page. A Clash of Kings picks up right where A Game of Thrones leaves off, so it could be slightly confusing for a reader who is new to the series. Martin follows up his excellent introduction to the Series of Ice and Fire with another page turner that readers will find very engaging. ![]() ![]() ![]() They are controlled by a body called ‘The Council’ who forbid certain activities such as revealing themselves to regular humans. More importantly, they need to come together and help each other in their forthcoming struggles, a task which won’t be easy considering the way that some of these girls feel about each other. They’ve come together in spite of themselves, they certainly aren’t friends and they’re about to discover that they have each been gifted with strange abilities and are to be bound together by an ancient power, one which they must master in order to survive. It starts out fairly quickly and brings together six girls, under a red moon.
